Wenda Bendera’s Vision for Affordable, Digital Skincare Solutions

The journey of Cameroonian entrepreneur and founder of MarOr Naturals Wenda Bendera epitomizes resilience, passion and ingenuity.

Born and raised in Cameroon, Wenda is the last child in a family of six, with a multicultural background that has deeply influenced her worldview.

Her mother hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, while her father is Cameroonian. Growing up in Cameroon, a country known for its bilingualism, Wenda navigated an education system that offered both Anglophone and Francophone influences.

She pursued an Anglophone education, which fueled her ambitions in the sciences. Her early academic pursuits were driven by a desire to become a doctor, a goal inspired by her fascination with biology, chemistry and physics.

The Spark of Entrepreneurship

Wenda’s academic path was marked by determination and adaptability. She obtained her GCE Advanced Level in Sciences, specializing in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the goal of entering medical school.

She enrolled at the University of Yaoundé I to study Biology but soon realized that her interests extended beyond traditional academic boundaries. Less than a year into university, she transferred to the Congo-Cameroon Inter-States University at Sangmelima, where she recently earned a master’s degree in digital engineering. This transition exemplifies her flexibility and willingness to explore new horizons.

From her second year in university, Wenda was introduced to the concepts of entrepreneurship and management.

She recalls: “We were introduced to Entrepreneurship and Management and I fell in love with it.” Despite her newfound interest, she initially saw little reason to pursue business creation, perceiving it as a secondary pursuit to her academic ambitions.

However, a simple outing in Sangmelima ignited her entrepreneurial spirit. During a visit to a local eatery, she was disappointed by the lack of quality pizza comparable to those in Yaoundé. This frustration became the catalyst for her first business venture, Delissioza Pizza.

Early Challenges and Lessons Learned

Starting Delissioza Pizza was a bold move, but it ultimately faced setbacks.

In retrospect, Wenda admits: “Unfortunately, it was a failure. The demand grew organically, but I did not have a good organization in my way of proceeding while taking into consideration my timetable as an engineering student. Things did not work out and I closed the business.”

Her experience underscored the importance of structured planning, time management and understanding market dynamics. It was these lessons that would inform her future endeavors.

Driven by personal and health challenges, the year 2022 marked a turning point in Wenda’s life. During an intensely stressful academic period, she developed severe hormonal acne, resulting in painful pimples and persistent hyperpigmentation.

Her self-esteem plummeted and she became ashamed to leave the house.

“I cried myself to sleep for weeks until I got tired of being a victim,” she recalls. It was a pivotal moment that propelled her into action.

From Personal Struggles to Business Opportunities

Recognizing the emotional toll being brought about by her skin condition, Wenda sought professional help. Together with her mother, she visited a dermatologist in Yaoundé, where she learned about her skin issues and began treatment.

After a year, she saw improvements but faced a new challenge when her skin started resisting chemical treatments. This prompted her to experiment with natural remedies, including herbs, spices and clay.

Her success with these solutions garnered curiosity among friends and family, which motivated her to share her skincare secrets more broadly.

Wenda explains: “People became curious about the secret to my skin evolution, so I started selling my skin solutions.”

Witnessing positive testimonials from users inspired her to transform her personal skincare routine into a formal business. She officially launched MarOr Naturals, establishing a legal entity, building a team and surrounding herself with mentors to guide her through the intricacies of running a health-tech company.

Building MarOr Naturals

MarOr Naturals is not only a skincare brand but is also a health-tech enterprise dedicated to providing affordable and effective acne treatments. Wenda attributes her growth to the lessons learned from her earlier business failures and her resilience.

“I used all the lessons I learned from my first business and grew from them,” she states.

Recognizing that capital is a major barrier for young entrepreneurs, she emphasizes the importance of financial planning.

“My secret is that I have a financial plan for at least a year or three ahead and I am not afraid to start small,” Wenda shares.

Her approach involves self-financing through savings and leveraging support from friends and family.

Today, MarOr Naturals employs eight people and recorded revenues of less than 10 million FCFA last year.

Despite being a small business under OHADA regulations, Wenda’s vision extends far beyond her current scale. The company aims to bridge healthcare and digital technology, exploring innovative avenues such as artificial intelligence and software engineering to improve skincare solutions.

“Our goal is to help over 30 million people per country affected by acne to get rid of it effectively and ease their access to counseling with skin professionals,” she says with enthusiasm.

The company’s mission is rooted in making quality skincare accessible and affordable while leveraging technological advancements.

Overcoming Obstacles and Looking Ahead

Like any entrepreneurial journey, Wenda’s path has not been devoid of challenges. Sourcing reliable suppliers has proven to be a significant hurdle, impacting product quality and consistency.

“This has been a very big battle because everything else results-wise greatly depends on this aspect,” she notes.

Logistics, especially the delivery of products outside Cameroon, also remains a headache, further emphasizing the need for strategic planning and resilience.

Despite these obstacles, Wenda remains optimistic and committed. Her story exemplifies how personal adversity can be transformed into a business opportunity with determination, innovation and a clear vision.

She believes that her journey is just beginning and encourages other young entrepreneurs to embrace their challenges as steppingstones towards success.
