Africa’s tech ecosystem just earned another global ovation, as Vambo AI, a multilingual generative AI startup led by Zimbabwean-born entrepreneur Chido Dzinotyiwei, clinched the top prize of $100,000 at the Datamellon Global Finals in San Francisco.

Outshining hundreds of global contenders, Vambo AI’s groundbreaking pitch triumphed at the prestigious competition, marking a watershed moment for African-led artificial intelligence on the world stage.

“I am still in disbelief. I cannot believe it. I am so grateful!” said Chido, co-founder and CEO of Vambo AI. “We came here with one mission: to show the world that multilingual, African-led AI has a place on the global stage. We are leaving with so much more clarity, conviction, new partners and a deeper fire to scale what we have started.”

Founded to bridge linguistic gaps and preserve Africa’s rich cultural heritage, Vambo AI currently supports 44 African languages, helping schools, businesses and governments unlock communication in some of the most underserved communities on the continent.

But winning the Datamellon finals was more than just a single event. For Chido, the victory was forged through grit, preparation and a global mindset honed within the Datamellon Accelerator. This transformative platform helped fine-tune Vambo’s product-market fit through AI-curated mentorship.

“The real win started long before the final pitch,” she reflected. “The Datamellon Accelerator was one of the most transformative, catalytic experiences in my entrepreneurial journey especially because of its focus on truly addressing all elements of building a global AI company.”

Chido also paid tribute to the mentors, judges and peers who shaped their journey: “Thank you to the judges Venu Anuganti, Ryan Welsh, Annija Eizenarma and Romi Bhatia for your insights and belief in our vision. This was more than a programme. It was a launchpad.”

With accolades that include the Aanit Prize for Social Impact, features in Forbes Africa and a place in Slator’s Top 50 Language AI Startups of 2024, Chido Dzinotyiwei is no stranger to impact. But this moment, she says, signals something bigger:

“Being in San Francisco has reminded me that Africa’s voice in AI isn’t optional or distant. It’s an overdue requirement. And what we’re building at Vambo AI remains necessary.”

With her roots in development finance and venture building, and as a proud Mandela Rhodes Scholar and Injini–Mastercard Foundation Fellow, Chido now stands at the helm of a venture poised to redefine inclusion in tech.

“The future of AI is multilingual,” she declares. “And we are building it.”

Vambo AI is a Kenyan-based, pioneering multilingual intelligence platform using generative AI to power inclusive language solutions across Africa and beyond. With a mission to preserve heritage and drive access through language, the platform is helping reshape education, customer engagement and knowledge transfer in the Global South.
