UK Government Backs New Pan-African Startup Support Platform for London Tech Week

The United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has backed the launch of the UK–Africa Ecosystem Week, marking the British government’s first coordinated, pan-African support framework to be deployed during London Tech Week.

The bilateral corridor initiative, designed to institutionalize capital and market access for high-growth African startups, signals a shift in the UK’s strategy to position London as the primary international regulatory and venture launchpad for African technology companies scaling outside the continent.

The program is engineered by the UK–Africa Sandbox and emerging-markets advisory firm Ventures 54. It operates in a synchronized partnership with the DBT, the UK South Africa Tech Hub, the UK Nigeria Tech Hub, promotional agency London & Partners, and the Mayor of London’s office.

The initiative moves African tech participation at London Tech Week which draws over 100,000 global attendees across 500 events from informal networking into a highly structured, corporate-backed commercial pipeline.

Institutionalizing the Trade Corridor

The initiative scales up what began as grassroots community meetups under the London Africa Network banner into a formalized trade framework. This structured layer provides high-growth delegations with dedicated workspaces, corporate concierge operations, and access to a central “Africa Lounge” designed for private equity matching and cross-border regulatory navigation.

“We’ve seen a clear increase in the number of African founders coming to London Tech Week to explore the UK market,” said Anthony William Catt, founder of Ventures 54 and the UK–Africa Sandbox.

“Over the past four years, we’ve been building support around that, starting with a simple mixer, evolving into a full day of programming, and now scaling into a full week of activity. This is about putting the right structure in place, so African founders have a dedicated support track to get the most out of the week and access the best of what the UK has to offer.”

The deployment lands as international venture capital inflows into African tech ecosystems experience a liquidity correction, forcing startups to seek mature secondary markets and foreign corporate structures to secure late-stage growth capital. By establishing a direct regulatory conduit, the UK aims to capture a significant share of these flipping structures and international listings.

“As home to one of the world’s largest and fastest growing tech ecosystems, a deep VC pool and unrivalled access to global talent, the UK is a natural next step for ambitious African founders looking to scale internationally,” said Ben Ainsley, His Majesty’s Acting Trade Commissioner for Africa.

“The UK Government is committed to supporting high-growth international companies succeed in the UK and initiatives like the UK–Africa Sandbox demonstrate our focus on making it easier for African founders to access support and fully engage with the UK’s world-class innovation ecosystem.”

Cross-Border Capital Flows

The program will process sovereign delegations and executive cohorts from Africa’s primary technology hubs, explicitly targeting high-growth enterprise founders from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Algeria and Ghana.

Key Operational Milestones: UK–Africa Ecosystem Week

  • Sunday, June 7: Opening institutional reception at the Africa Centre, London.
  • June 7–9: Managed access to corporate roundtables, investor matching protocols, and technical market-entry tracks.
  • Wednesday, June 10: Flagship UK–Africa Ecosystem Day and the London Africa Network executive closing session.

The municipal government in London has identified the corridor as a strategic growth priority following formal trade missions to the continent. The objective is to anchor African corporate entities within London’s commercial ecosystem to generate mutual economic outcomes.

“London is a global hub for investment and innovation, and our strength comes from our international connections,” said Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth.

“Following the Mayor of London’s successful trade mission to Africa last year, we continue to see exciting opportunities to deepen partnerships between London and Africa. Initiatives like this to boost our tech ecosystems, launched at London Tech Week, will help us to do just that as we continue to build a better, more prosperous London for everyone.”

Janet Coyle CBE, Managing Director of London & Partners, added: “The launch of the UK-Africa Ecosystem Week emphasises the importance of the channel between London and African ecosystems. We are delighted to bring it into the fold of London Tech Week, an event which highlights London’s role as Europe’s leading tech hub, driving innovation across industries and connecting the brightest minds from around the globe.”

Year-Round Sandbox Expansion

The week-long program serves as the seasonal peak for the broader UK–Africa Sandbox, a permanent, year-round platform funded via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Originally anchored around isolated country programs via the UK South Africa and UK Nigeria Tech Hubs, the platform is now converting into an integrated, pan-African corridor network.

The scaled infrastructure is designed to solve dual market friction points, providing operational runway, corporate structuring advice and series-stage capital access for African scale-ups in the UK, while simultaneously clearing de-risked regulatory pathways for British technology firms seeking expansion into African jurisdictions.

Applications for corporate delegation tracks and structured support have opened via the initiative’s digital portal (ukafricasandbox.com/ecosystem-week), as Western and emerging market tech ecosystems position themselves ahead of the June summit.
