In the dynamic corridors of South Africa’s tech industry, the remarkable journey of Thami Dineka, Managing Executive at Krowns IT Group, exemplifies extraordinary resilience, vision, and steadfast determination.

From humble beginnings in Johannesburg Soweto to leading a dynamic enterprise in technology, Thami’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance and strategic foresight.

A Humble Beginning and the Power of Education

Born and raised in Johannesburg Soweto, Thami’s early years in the East Rand laid the foundation for his relentless pursuit of growth.

Reflecting on his start, he shares, “I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be mentored at the age of 20 by an executive under Khula Enterprise. After three years, I thought I was ready to go on my own—but I was wrong.”

His realization that education was essential led him to pivot from entrepreneurship to academia, earning a law degree over four years.

Turning Passion into Purpose: From Law to Tech

Initially, Thami ventured into contract law but soon discovered his true passion lay elsewhere. “I missed the business development chase,” he admits.

A close friend’s suggestion to join a tech startup ignited his love for technology. Thami’s subsequent role at Business Connexion, managing a portfolio of R250 million annually, was pivotal.

“The tech world forces you to live in the future,” he explains. This insight fueled his vision to establish Krowns Group in Woodmead, a company that leverages technology to create impactful solutions across various industries.

Identifying Gaps and Seizing Opportunities

Thami’s keen eye for market gaps is evident in his focus on cybersecurity. “The need for cybersecurity in Africa is urgent—our continent is about ten years behind,” he notes.

His ambition is to position Krowns Group as a leader in this domain, promoting local OEMs and fostering tech ownership within Africa. “We’re working on cybersecurity problems that will serve the African market with support, training and local ownership,” he emphasizes.

Adapting to a Challenging Business Environment

Discussing the evolution of the business landscape, Thami reflects, “Starting a business in South Africa today is one of the hardest things compared to 15 years ago.”

He highlights legislative hurdles, capital challenges, and systemic limitations in banking as significant obstacles. Despite these, his strategy revolves around innovation, resilience, and building strong networks.

“Having a dream in SA is not enough; you need connections, talent, and the right support,” he advises.

Lessons and Leadership

Thami’s journey has been rich with lessons. “Human capital is the most important asset,” he asserts. His emphasis on relationships over spreadsheets underscores his leadership philosophy: “People build companies, not just technology or spreadsheets.” His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Work in the industry first, learn key players, and understand client needs before flying solo.”

Future Outlook and Emerging Trends

Looking ahead, Thami is excited about artificial intelligence’s potential. “Everyone is eager to see how far AI can go,” he says. His current projects involve advancing Africa’s cybersecurity landscape, advocating for local tech solutions, and fostering innovation that benefits the continent.

Beyond Business: Passion Projects

Aside from Krowns Group, Thami invests his time in property through Joburg Investment Group and actively participates in media and entertainment, demonstrating his multifaceted interests and commitment to societal development.

Final Words of Wisdom

In closing, Thami Dineka leaves an inspiring message for entrepreneurs: “Master the art of relationships. Connections are built, not given. People are the true engine of success.” His story is a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and human capital in shaping Africa’s tech future.
