Tema Mobile App Launches With a Focus on Africa’s Healthcare Workforce

A new digital health platform, Tema, has entered the market with a clear and focused mission: to strengthen healthcare systems by investing directly in the people who keep them running. Launched on Saturday, the Tema mobile application is designed to support healthcare professionals by improving access to information, career opportunities and professional collaboration.

While healthcare reform has often focused on buildings, equipment and systems, Tema takes a different approach. It places healthcare workers at the centre, recognising that no system functions without skilled and supported professionals. The platform brings together essential tools that many healthcare workers have struggled to access consistently, particularly in settings where resources are limited.

Tema responds to real gaps within the healthcare workforce. Nurses often need access to updated national guidelines even when offline. Doctors search for credible CPD events to maintain their professional standards. Allied health professionals look for ways to collaborate across disciplines. Many healthcare workers seek new career opportunities but lack visibility or trusted platforms to explore them. Tema brings these needs into one digital space.

Speaking about the launch, Dr. Magano Akuaake, Co-Founder of the Tema App, emphasised the human side of healthcare systems and the motivation behind the platform.

“For decades, when we speak about improving healthcare, the focus has been on infrastructure, equipment and systems. And yes, those matter. But buildings do not treat patients. Machines do not comfort families. Systems do not stay late after a difficult shift. People do,” she said.

She added that healthcare workers continue to carry the system through skill, courage and resilience, often without adequate tools to support their growth and visibility. Tema, she explained, was built to address that imbalance.

Building Human Capacity Through Technology

Tema is not positioned as just another health app. Its purpose is broader and more strategic. The platform is designed as an investment in human capacity, based on the belief that improving healthcare outcomes begins with supporting those who deliver care.

“This is not just an app. This is an investment in human capacity. Because when you strengthen the workforce, you strengthen care,” Dr. Akuaake said.

The name Tema itself reflects that vision. In Oshiwambo, it means to light up. The platform aims to shine a light on healthcare professionals by supporting their career journeys, recognising their contributions and opening doors to growth.

Tema also carries significance as a woman-led digital health solution. Dr. Akuaake described the launch as a message of possibility, particularly to young girls who may aspire to build solutions in health and technology.

“As a woman-led digital health solution, I hope this moment speaks to every girl, that it is possible. It’s not easy, but with God, nothing is impossible,” she said.

A Call for Partners Who Believe in Workforce-Driven Impact

Beyond the app itself, Tema represents a broader call to action for investors, partners and stakeholders in health innovation. The founders are seeking collaborators who understand that sustainable impact comes from strengthening people, not just systems.

“Africa’s future in health innovation will be shaped by leaders who understand the realities of our people and dare to design for them,” Dr. Akuaake said.

As co-founder, she outlined a clear invitation to those willing to support the vision.

“Our call to investors, partners and stakeholders is to partner with us to back the workforce behind the system. Invest in solutions that scale knowledge, access and opportunity. Help us build technology that is African in insight and global in standard,” she said.

Tema’s approach speaks to a growing shift within Africa’s health and technology sectors. There is increasing recognition that lasting impact is not measured by ribbon cuttings or reports, but by how well solutions support real people over time.

“If you want impact that lives beyond ribbon cuttings and reports, build with us,” Dr. Akuaake concluded.

With its focus on access, growth and visibility for healthcare professionals, Tema enters the digital health space with a grounded and human-centred vision. Its success will be measured not only by downloads but by how effectively it supports the workforce that holds healthcare systems together every day.
