The procurement and supply sector in Southern Africa marked a milestone last week as 169 professionals earned the prestigious MCIPS designation, signalling both personal achievement and the region’s growing commitment to global standards in supply chain leadership.

The recognition ceremony, held at The Forum, The Campus, Sandton, honoured individuals who have demonstrated exceptional expertise, ethical grounding, and leadership in procurement and supply management. MCIPS — Member of the Chartered Institute for Procurement and Supply is widely regarded as the gold standard in the sector, with a global presence in 180 countries.

“As MCIPS professionals, you now step into a global profession that is addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges – resilient supply chains, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) alignment, ethical leadership and digital transformation. Your achievement signals that you are ready to contribute meaningfully to this evolving landscape,” said Paul Vos, Regional Managing Director of CIPS Southern Africa, during the ceremony.

Attaining MCIPS requires a combination of academic accomplishment, rigorous training and at least three years of relevant industry experience, underscoring a professional’s capability to operate in complex, rapidly evolving markets. For employers and stakeholders, the designation signals up-to-date knowledge and strategic value.

According to the CIPS Procurement & Supply Salary Guide 2025, MCIPS holders in South Africa earn an average of R996,232 annually, compared with R559,568 for non-MCIPS peers a premium of 78%. More than half of South African employers surveyed (53%) reported a preference for recruiting candidates who have achieved MCIPS or are pursuing it, highlighting the designation’s professional cachet.

A Celebration of Professional Growth and African Innovation

The ceremony drew professionals, family members and industry leaders, including Sam Achampong, CIPS Markets Director for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, who flew in from Dubai to mark the occasion. Beyond individual recognition, the event highlighted the sector’s collective progress and its role in strengthening African supply chains.

Vos noted that the past year had been transformative for CIPS in the region. The CIPS Africa Connect & Engage Conference in Johannesburg convened leaders, practitioners and partners to shape the future of procurement in Southern Africa.

“The continued growth of our membership reflects an increasing appetite for professionalism, community and impact across the continent,” Vos said, emphasising the link between skills development and regional economic resilience.

The event also facilitated networking and knowledge exchange, reinforcing CIPS’s commitment to lifelong learning, ethical standards and strategic supply chain innovation.

Driving Africa’s Supply Chains Forward

As Africa increasingly seeks to build resilient, sustainable and digitally enabled supply chains, MCIPS-certified professionals are positioned at the forefront of this transformation. From procurement in public institutions to strategic sourcing in multinational firms, their expertise drives efficiency, ethical governance, and economic value across the continent.

CIPS continues to partner with businesses, governments, and public institutions to develop procurement capability, deliver training and implement standards, ensuring that African enterprises remain competitive in a global marketplace.

With Southern Africa’s MCIPS membership growing steadily, the message is clear, professional excellence in procurement is no longer optional it is critical for Africa’s economic growth, innovation and entrepreneurial success.
