Cape Town-based marine biotechnology company MariHealth Solutions operating at the intersection of aquaculture and data science has been selected for the second consecutive year as a Global Deep Tech Pioneer by Hello Tomorrow, following a record-breaking competition that drew more than 4,800 applications from 108 countries.
MariHealth Solutions announced it had been chosen among 950 startups admitted into Hello Tomorrow’s 2026 Deep Tech Pioneers network, the largest cohort in the programme’s history.

For MariHealth, the selection represents a strategic validation at a time when food security, aquaculture efficiency and biotech innovation are climbing investor agendas worldwide.

Cracking aquaculture’s “black box”
MariHealth Solutions operates in the aquaculture healthcare sector, leveraging biotechnology to answer what it describes as the “black box” questions in fish and shellfish farming an industry increasingly central to global protein supply chains.
Aquaculture now accounts for more than half of global seafood consumption, yet disease outbreaks, suboptimal feed efficiency and opaque health metrics continue to erode margins and create systemic risk. As climate volatility alters marine ecosystems, precision health monitoring has become commercially critical.
MariHealth’s business-to-business model offers aquaculture producers a tailored, data-driven diagnostic framework. The company deploys a proteomics workflow coupled with deep data analytics to assess the health and metabolic status of farmed fish and shellfish. By translating complex protein datasets into actionable insights, it allows producers to optimise feeding strategies, reduce mortality and improve yield predictability.
“Essentially, we remove the burden of dealing with and making sense of large protein datasets so our clients can focus on what really matters optimizing and refining farming and nutrition through our robust decision support methodology,” the company said.
The model aligns with a broader global shift toward precision agriculture and bio-analytics, where data-rich biological insights are replacing reactive farming methods. In Africa aquaculture production has grown steadily but still trails global averages. Technology-driven health management could unlock productivity gains across coastal economies.
Deep tech gains strategic weight
Founded in 2011, Hello Tomorrow was created by a group of individuals convinced that science and technology must form part of a toolkit of solutions to change our industries, sustain a growing population and help solve global crises.
The organisation argues that traditional technology transfer models moving ideas from lab to market, have been too slow to address urgent systemic challenges. Over time, it has built what it calls a global ecosystem facilitating deep tech innovation through international events, startup programmes, consulting and industry partnerships.
Across nine editions of its Global Startup Challenge, Hello Tomorrow has received 30,000 applications from 132 countries, working with universities and research institutions worldwide to identify science-based ventures with scalable impact.
This year’s Challenge partners include DSM-Firmenich Ventures, ASML, L’Oréal, Breakthrough Energy, GTT – Technology for a Sustainable World, Damen, NXP Semiconductors and Syensqo signalling a strong corporate appetite for frontier science.
An external jury and sponsors are now selecting finalists for the 11th edition of the Hello Tomorrow Challenge. Finalists will pitch on 11–12 June 2026 at the Hello Tomorrow Summit in Amsterdam, a key convening point for global deep tech capital.
Africa’s biotech moment
MariHealth’s selection arrives as African-led innovation begins to command greater international attention. Venture funding on the continent has fluctuated in line with global capital cycles, but sectors such as climate tech, agri-biotech and health analytics continue to attract strategic investors seeking defensible, science-driven models.
Deep tech, defined by breakthrough scientific or engineering advances rather than incremental software, is increasingly seen as critical to economic sovereignty. Governments across Europe, Asia and North America have sharpened industrial strategies around semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology and energy systems. African startups operating in these arenas are positioning themselves within global value chains rather than local niches.
For South Africa, which hosts the continent’s most advanced biotechnology research infrastructure, companies like MariHealth illustrate the commercialisation potential of applied science. By targeting aquaculture health, a sector tied directly to food resilience and export competitiveness, the company operates within a market whose relevance extends far beyond regional boundaries.
