Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hotel came alive last night, hosting hundreds in person and thousands online as South Africa’s innovation ecosystem gathered to celebrate the Startup Club ZA’s 2025 South African Startup Awards. Now in its third year, the Awards have cemented themselves as the nation’s flagship platform recognising the most promising early-stage technology ventures.
This year’s campaign reflected the sector’s growing dynamism. 221 entries were submitted in just five days, supported by 4,121 verified public votes. A strengthened panel of 28 expert judges evaluated the entries, culminating in a 44-finalist lineup across 12 sector-specific categories.
Following a rigorous adjudication process, the winners emerged:
- AI & Big Data – Nineteen58: Building omnichannel AI agents to transform customer service and drive business growth.
- Climate & Sustainability – Still Good: Connecting South Africans with local businesses to rescue unsold food at discounted prices.
- ConsumerTech – Dream Drive: A skills-based platform making car ownership accessible to everyday South Africans.
- DeepTech – MariHealth Solutions: Leveraging biotech to enhance sustainable aquaculture practices and optimise fish health and nutrition.
- Digital Commerce – SKUBU: The first fully automated refill retail store, offering packaging-free groceries for up to 50% less.
- EdTech – LEVRA: Using proprietary psychometrics and immersive learning to boost employee communication, teamwork, and resilience.
- FinTech – Jem: Delivering affordable HR and financial services to frontline workers via WhatsApp.
- Future of Work – ArcFlow: AI-powered ERP software bringing enterprise-level automation and efficiency to SMEs.
- HealthTech – Biomine Health: Using gut bacteria analysis to predict which cancer drugs are likely to succeed before immunotherapy begins.
- Informal Market – PayGas: Enabling low-income households to refill LPG cylinders on a pay-as-you-go basis, from as little as R10.
- Mobility & Logistics – Delivery Ka Speed: Bridging unreliable delivery infrastructure and youth unemployment in underserved communities.
- People’s Choice – FindHomes: An AI-powered property intelligence platform revealing true costs, value, and investment potential.
The Awards highlighted not only individual success but also the momentum of South Africa’s broader tech ecosystem. From urban centers to underserved communities, these startups are solving high-value problems through technology, combining innovation with practical social impact.
