South Africa’s private capital industry has unveiled a new leadership pipeline initiative aimed at shaping the sector’s future decision-makers, with the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA) announcing the first-ever cohort of its Fellowship Programme.
Following what SAVCA described as an exceptionally competitive selection process, 10 emerging professionals from some of South Africa’s leading investment firms have been selected for the inaugural SAVCA Fellowship Class of 2027, a prestigious 11-month leadership and professional development programme designed to accelerate the careers of high-potential private capital professionals.
The fellows were chosen from a highly talented pool of applicants spanning South Africa’s private equity, venture capital, infrastructure, impact investing and asset management sectors.
The inaugural cohort includes Miranda Mashile of Ditiro Capital, Gaone Segwe of International Housing Solutions South Africa, Lungelo Makhathini of Edge Growth Ventures, Sazisile Ndamse of Adenia Partners, Ndimande Marutha of Agile Capital, Masechaba Makhura of 27Four, Brent Smit of Inspired Evolution, Tshegofatso Tshukudu of Adenia Partners, Khumo Keebine of African Rainbow Capital and Zamampondo Nqandalo of Mineworkers Investment Company.
According to SAVCA, the selected candidates distinguished themselves not only through technical expertise and professional achievement but also through their demonstrated capacity to influence the future direction of Africa’s investment industry.
“Selected from a highly talented pool of applicants from across South Africa’s private capital ecosystem, these 10 individuals stood out for their leadership potential, ambition, professional excellence, and commitment to shaping the future of the industry,” SAVCA said.
The launch comes at a critical moment for Africa’s investment landscape. As institutional capital increasingly seeks opportunities in infrastructure, climate finance, digital transformation, healthcare, manufacturing and financial inclusion, the demand for experienced investment professionals capable of managing complex transactions and mobilising capital has intensified.
Private capital has become one of the most influential drivers of economic growth across Africa. Industry data shows private equity, venture capital and private debt funds have deployed billions of dollars into African businesses over the past decade, supporting entrepreneurship, job creation and economic diversification.
Yet industry leaders have increasingly highlighted leadership succession, mentorship and talent development as major priorities for sustaining long-term growth.
SAVCA said the Fellowship Programme was established specifically to address those challenges by creating structured pathways for emerging leaders to gain exposure to senior executives, industry best practices and advanced investment expertise.
“Being chosen for the Fellowship is no small achievement,” the organisation said.
“The calibre of applications received made for a rigorous adjudication process, with our panel faced with the difficult task of identifying those who demonstrated not only strong technical capability, but also the potential to lead, influence, and drive meaningful impact.”
The programme will run from May 2026 through March 2027 and is limited to a maximum of 10 fellows annually, reinforcing its positioning as one of the most exclusive professional development initiatives in South Africa’s private capital sector.
Over the next 11 months, participants will undertake a structured curriculum combining formal learning, executive mentorship, collaborative cohort projects and reflective leadership practice.
The programme will expose fellows to technical investment skills, business strategy, leadership development and industry-specific insights through a series of curated modules.
Participants will explore topics ranging from “Leading Self” and “Leading Others” to “Leading Fund Management,” “Leading Fundraising,” “Leading Transactions,” “Leading Business,” “Leading Industry,” and “Leading for South Africa.”
In addition to the formal curriculum, fellows will receive one-on-one mentorship from senior industry executives, access to SAVCA’s training programmes and courses, and opportunities to engage with influential business leaders shaping the future of African private capital.
SAVCA said the initiative was launched to accelerate the development of future industry leaders, expand learning opportunities for high-potential professionals, strengthen networks between emerging and senior leaders, and cultivate a culture of mentorship within the sector.
The programme also seeks to address a longstanding challenge facing the investment industry: limited mentorship capacity.
By institutionalising mentorship and leadership development, SAVCA aims to create a sustainable framework through which knowledge, experience and best practices can be transferred between generations of investment professionals.
The selected fellows are expected not only to benefit from the programme but also to shape its future.
“As the inaugural class, they will also play an important role in shaping the legacy of the SAVCA Fellowship and setting the standard for future cohorts,” the organisation said.
For South Africa’s private capital industry, the Fellowship represents more than a leadership programme. It is a strategic investment in the people who will be responsible for allocating capital, backing entrepreneurs, driving transactions and influencing economic development across the continent over the coming decades.
As competition for investment talent intensifies globally, initiatives such as the SAVCA Fellowship could become increasingly important in ensuring Africa develops the leadership capacity needed to deploy capital effectively, support business growth and unlock the continent’s economic potential.
“To our Fellows: congratulations on this well-deserved achievement,” SAVCA said.
“Being selected for the Fellowship is a significant achievement and a recognition of your potential, commitment, and readiness to grow as a leader.”
