Egyptian healthtech startup Reme-D has raised $1.45 million in a Pre-Series A funding round to expand access to affordable molecular diagnostic testing across Africa and other underserved markets. The investment will help the company increase manufacturing capacity, introduce new diagnostic products and strengthen its presence across the region, supporting efforts to improve access to life-saving healthcare.
The funding round was led by Anara Impact Capital, with participation from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures and other investors. It follows a $500,000 investment from the Global Innovation Fund received in April to support the scale-up of the company’s molecular diagnostics solutions.
Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic tests for diseases including tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis and human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the leading causes of cervical cancer in women. The company focuses on producing tests that are accurate, affordable and temperature-resilient, making them suitable for use in remote communities and healthcare facilities with limited infrastructure.
The new funding will allow Reme-D to significantly expand its manufacturing operations while increasing access to advanced diagnostics in markets where such technologies have often been difficult to obtain.
“Our ultimate goal is that patients in Africa and the Global South are no longer blocked from life-altering disease diagnosis by cost or availability of an advanced molecular test in their area,” said Tammam.
Expanding Local Manufacturing and Healthcare Access
Since its launch, Reme-D has built a strong foundation in Africa’s growing health technology sector. The company has developed and commercialised 30 diagnostic products from its manufacturing facility in Cairo and supplied more than 550,000 tests across Egypt, Kenya and Sudan.
Its products are used by public and private laboratories, hospitals and research institutions, and have also supported international scientific research. The company has additionally filed a United States patent application covering its proprietary diagnostic technology.
To meet growing demand, Reme-D will relocate to a new 1,500-square-metre manufacturing facility equipped with upgraded technology. The expansion is expected to increase production capacity by ten times while strengthening the company’s quality systems and regulatory capabilities.
The funding will also support the development of new molecular diagnostic tests targeting genetic diseases and cancer. In addition, the company plans to expand its portfolio of temperature-resilient products, making them easier to transport, store and use in low-resource environments where maintaining cold storage can be a challenge.
The company has also grown rapidly since its establishment, increasing its workforce from five employees to 50 as it continues to scale its operations.
Strengthening Africa’s Health Innovation Ecosystem
Beyond manufacturing, Reme-D is also contributing to public health innovation across the continent. Earlier this year, the company equipped a custom-built solar-powered mobile laboratory commissioned by the World Health Organization Egypt Country Office. The laboratory supports the Egyptian Ministry of Health in monitoring vector-borne diseases in remote communities, demonstrating how locally developed technology can help improve healthcare delivery.
As the company expands, it plans to strengthen market access across Africa while continuing to invest in locally developed scientific solutions.
Tammam said the company’s progress also highlights the growing contribution of African innovation to global healthcare.
