African technology company Qhala has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with Mistral AI and French Tech Nairobi to launch the Mistral Accelerator Bootcamp, an initiative expected to strengthen Africa’s growing artificial intelligence ecosystem and create new opportunities for local innovators.

The agreement was signed during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi this week. The programme is designed to support African founders building AI-driven solutions in sectors that directly affect millions of people across the continent, including education, healthcare and agriculture.

The initiative comes at a time when Africa’s startup ecosystem is increasingly looking at artificial intelligence as a tool to solve local challenges while creating scalable businesses. Through the accelerator, selected entrepreneurs from across Africa will receive technical training on Mistral AI’s advanced AI models, practical mentorship and access to a structured incubation programme aimed at helping promising ventures grow into sustainable companies.

For Qhala, the partnership reflects its long-standing belief that Africa’s most impactful AI solutions should be developed by African entrepreneurs who understand local realities and market needs. The company says the programme is intended to give founders the tools, knowledge and support needed to build globally competitive businesses from the continent.

Building Africa’s Digital Future

Qhala has positioned itself as a company focused on accelerating Africa’s digital transformation journey. The company works across sectors including healthcare, life sciences, financial services and the wider digital economy, using technology to improve access, efficiency and innovation.

The company was founded in early 2020 by Dr Shikoh Gitau, a computer scientist and former head of innovation at Safaricom. Qhala was conceptualized with a mission to use technology to improve millions of lives across Africa. Its founders identified a major gap in digital skills and technical capacity across the continent and built the company to help address that challenge.

Through the new accelerator programme, Qhala is seeking to help close another critical gap: access to advanced AI knowledge and venture-building support for African startups.

The programme’s focus on education, health and agriculture is also significant because these sectors continue to face major challenges across many African countries. AI-powered tools have the potential to improve learning access, strengthen healthcare systems, support farmers with better data and productivity tools and create more efficient services for communities.

By supporting startups working in these areas, the initiative could contribute not only to business growth but also to broader social and economic development.

Global Collaboration With Local Impact

The partnership also highlights increasing collaboration between African and international technology players. Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has quickly become one of Europe’s leading artificial intelligence startups. The French company was established by researchers Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, who previously worked at organizations including Google DeepMind and Meta.

Mistral AI has built its reputation around developing open and accessible AI models as part of its mission to democratize artificial intelligence and make advanced technology available to more people and businesses.

Meanwhile, French Tech Nairobi continues to play an important role in connecting founders, investors and technology leaders across East Africa. The organization focuses on encouraging collaboration between French and East African tech ecosystems and supporting entrepreneurial initiatives in the region.

The new accelerator programme is expected to strengthen these connections further while helping African startups gain exposure to global expertise, networks and technology.
