Proparco has invested €150,000 in Kenyan agritech company Farm to Feed to support its work to reduce food loss, increase smallholder farmer incomes and improve access to markets.
The investment will help Farm to Feed strengthen its technology platform, expand its operations and work with more farmers. It will also support the company’s value-added activities, helping more of the food already produced by farmers reach markets.
Farm to Feed uses technology to connect fragmented agricultural supply with buyer demand. The company helps farmers understand market requirements, plan production and commercialise more of their harvest. At the same time, buyers gain a more reliable way to source the products and volumes they need.
The investment comes as Kenya and other markets across sub-Saharan Africa continue to face significant food loss. An estimated 50% of fruits and vegetables in the region are lost before reaching the market. This affects farmer incomes and creates wider economic and environmental costs.
Technology connects farmers with reliable markets
Food loss is partly driven by fragmented and unpredictable food markets. Many farmers have limited visibility of future demand and do not have reliable access to the inputs and information needed to plan production. This can result in overproduction, inconsistent quality and produce that does not find a buyer.
Buyers face a related challenge. They often have to work with large and fragmented groups of suppliers. This can make it difficult to consistently source the right products, volumes and quality.
Farm to Feed addresses these challenges through a technology platform designed for the local agricultural market. The platform coordinates sourcing, demand forecasting, sales, logistics, warehousing and payments.
The company forecasts buyer demand and matches it with available supply. It also communicates requirements to farmers, provides logistics and facilitates rapid payments. This gives farmers a more predictable route to market and allows them to commercialise a wider range of what they produce.
Farm to Feed also uses its “Grade Rescue” and “Ready to Use” product lines to create markets for imperfect and surplus produce. The company processes some of this produce to improve convenience and extend shelf life. The products serve both domestic and international markets.
The approach is already reaching a large network. Farm to Feed has 5,500 registered farmers and more than 160 B2B customers. Its customers include hotels, schools, hospitals, food processors and institutional feeding programmes.
Its technology platform includes a farmer app, an enterprise resource planning system and a customer e-commerce platform. Together, these tools provide the digital infrastructure needed to coordinate the supply chain.
The company has recorded more than 100% year-on-year growth for three consecutive years. It also has a Net Promoter Score of 92 and is expanding beyond Nairobi into other parts of Kenya.
Investment to expand farmer and environmental impact
Farm to Feed reported significant results in its 2025 impact report. The company recorded a 249% increase in farmer income through reliable markets, fair pricing and higher offtake volumes. It also reported an 81% reduction in food loss on farms working with the company.
By improving coordination between farmers and buyers, the model helps make better use of the land, water and agricultural inputs already invested in food production. Farmers also receive greater visibility on demand and can receive payment within days rather than waiting weeks.
Farm to Feed was founded in 2021 by three women entrepreneurs. This makes Proparco’s investment a 2X-labelled investment, reflecting its support for a women-founded business.
Claire van Enk, Chief Executive Officer of Farm to Feed, said Africa’s population is expected to nearly double by 2050 and that food systems need to be strengthened to support this growth.
“Today, farmers lack visibility on demand, buyers struggle to source consistently, and too much of what is grown never finds the right market,” van Enk said. She added that Farm to Feed was built to address this fragmentation and that Proparco’s investment will help the company create more value for farmers and reduce waste.
Fabrice Perez, Head of the Financial Institutions and Innovation Division at Proparco, said food loss affects climate, food security and farmers’ livelihoods.
“By supporting Farm to Feed’s growth ambitions, Proparco is backing an innovative business model that provides tangible solutions to these challenges,” Perez said.
Proparco’s funding will support the strengthening of Farm to Feed’s technology and operational capabilities, while expanding its network of partner farmers. It will also help the company grow its value-added activities and increase the amount of harvested produce that can be successfully commercialised.
