In the heart of Algeria’s Oum El Bouaghi, a young boy grew up surrounded by books, lessons and the steady guidance of a father who taught and a mother who dedicated herself to the home. That boy, Oussama Siam, would grow into a figure reshaping the boundaries of technology in Africa. His path was far from linear; it was shaped by scarcity, perseverance and an unyielding curiosity that refused to be confined by circumstance. Today, Oussama is the founder of a private laboratory that bridges artificial intelligence, robotics and healthcare innovation. From developing AI-powered insulin injection and blood oxygen monitoring devices to pioneering chips that integrate diagnostic technology into everyday tools, he is proving that ingenuity and determination can transform not only an industry but the lives of those who depend on it. His story is one of a leader whose impact extends far beyond the walls of his laboratory.
Early Life and Educational Foundations
“I am Oussama Siam, born and raised in the wilaya of Oum El Bouaghi, Algeria. I come from a modest, middle-class family rooted in education and home life; my father was a teacher and my mother dedicated her life to our home,” Oussama reflects.
His childhood, shaped by middle-class challenges and the values instilled at home, was not without obstacles. Yet, these difficulties forged resilience and determination. Oussama gravitated toward complex technical fields, particularly robotics and mechatronics. “My journey was not a simple straight line; I faced numerous hardships and difficulties throughout my life. However, those challenges forged resilience in me. That drive, combined with the values I learned at home, shaped my determination to pursue complex technical fields, eventually leading me to become a developer in robotics and mechatronics.”
This combination of personal grit and intellectual curiosity became the foundation of his future entrepreneurial pursuits.
The Spark of Innovation
Oussama’s foray into healthcare technology was neither planned nor conventional. “My entry into the health technology field was actually an unplanned pivot inspired by a student named Imen Mahyaoui. Her influence opened my eyes to critical needs in patient care,” he explains.
While maintaining his role as a state employee, Oussama founded his private lab, driven by the desire to address gaps in patient care. Within this space, he developed a device powered by artificial intelligence capable of performing two critical functions: automated insulin injection and blood oxygen measurement. This innovation, based in his Algerian laboratory, illustrates his commitment to creating practical solutions that enhance healthcare accessibility.
Navigating the Business Landscape
The entrepreneurial journey in Algeria is complex, particularly in fields as advanced as mechatronics and AI. Oussama describes the rapid evolution of the technology sector, noting that integrating AI into everyday hardware is now essential.
“My strategy to stay ahead relies on continuous diversification within my private lab. I don’t restrict myself to one domain; while I started with health tech, I am actively expanding into broader robotics and drone manufacturing to ensure my skills and innovations remain at the cutting edge of technology,” he says.
This adaptability and commitment to diversification highlight Oussama’s forward-thinking approach. His ability to anticipate trends while simultaneously developing practical solutions positions him as a leader in Algeria’s emerging tech landscape.
Overcoming Adversity
The path to innovation has been far from easy. Growing up in a middle-class family presented significant barriers to accessing expensive, technical fields. Yet, Oussama’s response was unwavering.
“As I mentioned, my life before becoming a developer was filled with difficulties. Growing up in a middle-class family and trying to break into expensive, complex fields like mechatronics in Algeria presented significant hurdles regarding resources and access. The most significant lesson I learned from overcoming these hardships is perseverance. I learned that necessity is the mother of invention and that resilience is more important than having immediate access to vast resources.”
This mindset, seeing scarcity as an opportunity for invention, has guided Oussama through every stage of his entrepreneurial journey.
Innovations That Impact Lives
Among his notable achievements is the development of his AI-powered insulin injection and blood oxygen monitoring device. This tool is particularly transformative in regions where access to reliable healthcare monitoring is limited.
“My most notable success so far is the development of the AI-powered insulin injection and blood oxygen monitoring device. In regions like ours, access to reliable, automated healthcare monitoring can be a challenge for many patients. This project demonstrates the potential to use advanced technology, mechatronics and AI, to create practical solutions that directly improve the quality of life for people dealing with chronic conditions,” Oussama explains.
Beyond healthcare, his lab is pushing boundaries in robotics, drone manufacturing and the development of specialized chips based on NFC identity card technology. These chips are designed to measure blood glucose levels, aiming to integrate health monitoring seamlessly into everyday life.
Advice to Entrepreneurs
Oussama’s journey offers a roadmap for aspiring innovators, particularly those navigating industries with limited resources. “My advice is to look at my own path: I am a state employee who built a private innovation lab on the side because of passion and determination. Do not wait for perfect conditions or massive funding to start. Use the resources you have right now, balance your stable income with your passion projects and let your hardships fuel your insistence on succeeding.”
This philosophy underscores the value of determination, resourcefulness and the willingness to pursue projects incrementally while maintaining stability.
A Vision for the Future
Oussama remains focused on innovation that bridges technology and accessibility. He is particularly excited about the miniaturization of diagnostic tools and their integration into everyday objects. “I am incredibly excited about the miniaturization of diagnostic tools and their integration with everyday technology. This is the driving force behind my current major project: the development of the NFC-based identity cards that double as glucose monitoring chips. I believe integrating health monitoring into something as common as an ID card is the future of accessible healthcare,” he says.
His vision extends beyond devices and prototypes; it represents a philosophy of democratizing access to essential health services, particularly in underserved communities.
Lessons in Leadership and Inspiration
Reflecting on his journey, Oussama highlights the importance of remaining open to unexpected sources of inspiration. “The most significant lesson I learned is to remain open to inspiration from unexpected sources. My entire journey into health innovation began because of a student, Imen Mahyaoui. This taught me that a leader or innovator must always listen and be receptive to new perspectives, regardless of where they come from. It also reinforced that true success often comes after navigating significant life hardships, which builds the character necessary for leadership.”
His story illustrates how humility, openness and perseverance can coalesce to create lasting impact.
As Oussama continues to push boundaries in robotics, drones and health tech, his work promises to redefine the intersection of technology and accessibility, not only in Algeria but across Africa and beyond.
