In the bustling heart of Lagos, Nigeria, siblings Omobosola Karimat Alaka and Abolaji Alaka are orchestrating a revolution in the continent’s music industry.

Their brainchild, Hafrikplay, is emerging as Africa’s premier digital streaming and distribution platform, an ecosystem designed to empower artists, entertain listeners and redefine the creative economy across the continent.

When sitting down with the founders, it is crystal clear they are not only launching another startup but also building a movement rooted in cultural pride and technological innovation.

From Humble Beginnings to Visionary Leadership

Omobosola, affectionately known as Okal, grew up in the vibrant environment of Yaba, Lagos, where her father was a lecturer at Yabatech. Her early exposure to independent living and problem-solving laid the foundation for her entrepreneurial spirit.

“I started my first business at 15, helping students with admission registrations,” she recalls. Her journey into music as an artist revealed the systemic gaps within Africa’s creative ecosystem.

“My experience as a musician exposed me to how broken the system was for independent artists,” Omobosola explains. This realization fueled her passion to create solutions tailored for African artists, leading to the birth of MillionDollar Ideas (MDI) and later, Hafrikplay.

Abolaji, her brother and co-founder, was inspired by a similar vision.

“We wanted to create what Spotify did for the West, but for Africa,” he states. Recognizing that most digital service providers (DSPs) catered primarily to listeners without considering the needs of artists, Abolaji saw an opportunity to bridge this gap.

Headquartered in Lagos, Hafrikplay is now a team of talented individuals dedicated to transforming Africa’s music landscape.

“Our platform is hybrid, empowering artists with real-time dashboards and backend tools while offering users a seamless experience centered around African genres,” he elaborates.

Revolutionizing the African Music Ecosystem

Hafrikplay aims to be more than just a streaming platform and aspires to be the heartbeat of Africa’s creative economy. By offering artists tools to distribute, monetize and analyze their music, Hafrikplay addresses a critical need for transparency and growth within the industry.

It is a platform built from the ground up to serve both creators and consumers, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that nurtures talent and celebrates cultural diversity.

For Omobosola, the journey has been a testament to resilience and belief: “The most significant lesson I’ve learned is that you are your first believer. Success starts with your mindset. When you demonstrate tenacity and courage, people are inspired to contribute and support your vision.”

Her leadership style reflects this ethos. She leads with conviction and inspires her team to push boundaries.

A Future Rooted in Cultural Pride

As Hafrikplay gains momentum, the founders remain committed to a mission to put Africa on the global digital map as a powerhouse of musical talent and innovation.

Their story is a testament to how young entrepreneurs, driven by cultural pride and innovation, can reshape industries and empower a continent’s creative economy.

With their sights set on becoming “the Spotify for Africa,” Omobosola and Abolaji Alaka are not just building a platform but also creating a legacy that echoes the rhythm of Africa’s future.
