Mozambique has launched the Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA), a new industry association that could help strengthen the country’s technology sector by bringing together key players to develop and adopt artificial intelligence solutions for local needs.
The association, officially launched in Maputo, is expected to create a platform for government institutions, private companies, universities, researchers, technology professionals, entrepreneurs and civil society to work together on the development of Mozambique’s emerging AI ecosystem.
Building Local Capacity and Economic Opportunities
The creation of AMIA comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly relevant to sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, manufacturing, commerce and public administration. By creating a space for different parts of the economy to collaborate, the association could support the development of practical AI solutions while helping local businesses and institutions understand how the technology can be applied to their operations.
For Mozambique, the initiative also has the potential to support young people entering the technology sector. The country already has a growing pool of professionals, academics, researchers and young innovators with the skills to contribute to AI development. AMIA can help connect this talent with businesses, institutions and investment opportunities, creating pathways for new products, services and technology-based businesses.
The wider economic impact could include improved public services, greater efficiency in businesses and new opportunities for entrepreneurship. AI adoption could also help organisations make better use of data and improve decision-making across different areas of the economy.
The launch was opened by Lourino Chemane, Chairman of the Board of the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC), and included the swearing-in of members of AMIA’s leadership bodies.
The government is also working to establish the policy environment needed to support responsible AI development. INTIC is coordinating the preparation of a proposed National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which is expected to guide the development and use of AI across Mozambique.
Policy, Data and Private Sector Support
Alongside the proposed AI strategy, Mozambique is developing a proposed National Data Governance Policy and Strategy. Strong data governance will be important as organisations adopt AI, particularly because reliable and properly managed data is central to developing effective and responsible AI systems.
The private sector is also expected to play an important role. The Commercial and Investment Bank (BCI) has expressed support for initiatives that use technology to create economic and social value. The bank views AMIA as a potential platform for developing knowledge, attracting investment and building greater confidence in the use of AI applications.
The association therefore comes at a time when Mozambique is working to build the institutions, skills and policies required to participate in the growing regional and global AI economy.
AMIA’s success will ultimately depend on how effectively it turns collaboration into practical solutions. If government, business, academia and technology professionals work together, the association could help move AI from discussion to real applications that improve services, support businesses and create new economic opportunities in Mozambique.
