Applications for the 2027 intake of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation scholarship programme are now open, offering young Africans an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies while participating in a leadership development journey designed to shape the continent’s future leaders.

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship combines full financial support for postgraduate education with a structured leadership programme aimed at helping emerging leaders grow personally and professionally. The initiative is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most impactful leadership scholarships because it focuses not only on academic achievement but also on developing individuals who can drive positive change across the continent.

The programme seeks young Africans who show strong potential to lead and who align with the foundation’s core values of leadership, reconciliation, education and entrepreneurship. Through its support structure and network, the scholarship aims to equip scholars with the skills and mindset needed to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to Africa’s long term development.

Supporting Africa’s Emerging Leaders

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship offers comprehensive financial support for postgraduate study. This support helps talented African students access higher education opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. By removing financial barriers, the programme enables scholars to focus fully on their studies and leadership development.

Beyond financial support, the programme includes a leadership development component designed to challenge participants and encourage deep personal growth. Scholars participate in workshops, discussions and learning experiences that help them build self awareness, strengthen their leadership abilities and learn how to work effectively with people from different backgrounds.

The programme also connects scholars with a network of young African changemakers who share a common ambition to improve their communities and countries. This network is one of the programme’s most valuable assets, as it creates long term relationships among individuals who may go on to lead businesses, social enterprises, public institutions and civil society organisations across the continent.

Over time, the foundation has built a strong community of alumni who continue to collaborate, support each other and contribute to Africa’s development in various sectors.

Values That Guide the Selection Process

Candidates for the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship are selected based on a set of guiding principles that reflect the vision of the programme.

Leadership is one of the most important qualities the foundation looks for. Applicants are expected to demonstrate the potential to become visionary leaders who use their influence to advance equality, freedom, human rights and human dignity. The programme encourages scholars to view leadership not simply as personal success but as a responsibility to guide and inspire others.

Reconciliation is another core principle. The foundation seeks individuals who believe that addressing the past is an important step toward building a more just future. Scholars are encouraged to engage in honest reflection and dialogue while learning to understand and respect diverse perspectives.

Academic excellence also plays a key role in the selection process. Applicants are expected to have strong academic records and a commitment to using their education to make a meaningful difference in society. The programme emphasises that intellectual ability should be matched with strong character and a well rounded personality.

Entrepreneurship is equally important. The scholarship looks for individuals who demonstrate creativity, innovation and initiative. These qualities are seen as essential for helping Africa strengthen its role as a competitive and equal participant in the global economy.

Successful applicants must also show a willingness to engage deeply with the personal work of leadership. This includes developing self awareness, learning from the diversity within the scholar community and embracing the complexity of social and economic challenges facing the continent.

As applications open for the next cohort, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation is encouraging young Africans with leadership potential to apply and take part in what it describes as a life changing journey.

More information about the scholarship and the application process is available online and interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications before the 14 April 2026 deadline.
