Ethiopian entrepreneurship reached a new milestone as Maheder Foods, a company founded and led by Maheder Ademasu, officially joined Alibaba’s global online platforms. The agreement, signed at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China, positions Ethiopian spices, sauces and traditional foods on one of the world’s largest digital marketplaces. This achievement represents more than an expansion of business. It signals the growing visibility of Ethiopian products on the global stage and serves as an inspiring reminder of what determination can achieve.

For Ethiopian women entrepreneurs in particular, it marks a powerful moment of recognition and possibility, showing that local businesses can compete internationally when supported with vision and persistence. What began as a personal journey of solving household challenges has now transformed into an enterprise that exports culture, heritage and flavor across borders. By stepping onto a global platform, Maheder Foods is not only advancing its own growth but also opening the door for Ethiopia’s culinary traditions to be embraced worldwide.

Reflecting on the achievement, Maheder shared, “Fifteen years ago, I started my journey in food and entrepreneurship with a simple vision: to share the richness of Ethiopian products with the world. The road has been full of challenges, learning and resilience but each step prepared me for this milestone. Today, I am at Alibaba’s Head Office in Hangzhou, signing official agreements to bring Maheder Foods onto Alibaba’s global online platforms. This is more than business, it is proof that with persistence, dreams cross borders. It is a win not just for Maheder Foods but for Ethiopian products, women entrepreneurs and the next generation. My deepest gratitude to ITC for creating this bridge to the global market. The journey continues and the best is yet to come. Thanks to my friends and family for unlimited support.”

The story of Maheder Foods is deeply tied to the story of its founder. Born in Dessie City in the South Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, Maheder’s early education took place at a Catholic school before she moved to Addis Ababa for further studies. She earned a Diploma in Purchasing and Supply Management, a degree in Marketing Management and later an MBA in Project Management. These academic achievements laid the foundation for her business career but it was her personal experience managing household responsibilities that led her to identify a gap in the market.

In 2012 she launched Maheder Foods, inspired by the idea of making traditional Ethiopian cooking more convenient without losing its authenticity. At first she struggled to introduce pre-cooked sauces and spices to a market where homemade preparation was the norm. To build trust, she began by producing and selling individual ingredients. Over time she introduced a Tasting Centre in CMC Salite Miheret, where customers could experience the flavors firsthand. This helped people see that processed traditional foods could still be authentic, high quality and practical.

Recognition of her work came early when she participated in a national entrepreneurship competition hosted by the Ministry of Industry. Out of 670 participants, her business plan was selected among the top 40, giving her the opportunity to expand from a home-based operation into a standardized manufacturing industry. The recognition also came with four years of promotion on television and billboards, which increased the visibility of her products.

Today Maheder Foods employs 38 staff members, of whom 85 percent are women, underlining the company’s commitment to women’s empowerment. The business now operates four branches in Addis Ababa and exports a range of products that include beans, fresh and dried injera, sauces and spices. Alongside its commercial success, the company has embraced social responsibility by providing nutrition education, supporting women farmers and offering meals for homeless people and immigrants.

Maheder has also extended her influence beyond her company. She has trained and mentored young entrepreneurs, assisted in business plan development and hosted competitions in partnership with organizations such as GIZ, USAID projects, Dashen Bank, Ethiopian TV and various universities. She is the founder of the African Agricultural Academy Association and the Ethiopian Spices and Aromatic Flowers Processor and Exporter Association and is an active member of associations including Kawe, Aweb and Addis Ababa Merchant Women. She has also appeared as a television host for food and nutrition programs, sharing her expertise with wider audiences.

Her vision for Maheder Foods is to become a globally recognized food and spice processor and exporter, setting new standards for quality and innovation. The company’s mission emphasizes not only premium quality products but also the importance of exposing Ethiopian flavors to the international market. Maheder Foods stands on strong ethical values of honesty, integrity and reliability, while also embracing creativity and innovation to deliver new, healthy products. At the same time, the company prioritizes empowering young women in agriculture and product development, seeing this as an essential part of its role in the community.

Joining Alibaba’s global platforms represents a leap toward this vision. It provides Maheder Foods with the opportunity to reach millions of international consumers who are eager to explore authentic global cuisines. The move enhances not only the company’s growth prospects but also the visibility of Ethiopia’s culinary heritage on the world stage. It is a milestone that shows other Ethiopian entrepreneurs what is possible when persistence, innovation and support systems come together.

The story of Maheder Foods is ultimately a story of transformation. From humble beginnings in Dessie to international agreements in Hangzhou, Maheder Ademasu has proven that persistence can indeed carry dreams across borders. Her journey demonstrates the power of entrepreneurship to uplift individuals, communities and nations. With Alibaba now serving as a global gateway, Maheder Foods is set to share Ethiopian flavors with the world while continuing to empower women and inspire the next generation.
