A major shift in Lesotho’s digital future is underway, as Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) spearheads a bold nationwide 5G network expansion that promises to revolutionize access to digital tools, markets, and services for entrepreneurs and underserved communities alike.
Since February 2025, ETL has been rolling out its next-generation 5G infrastructure across all ten districts, more than doubling its active 5G sites from 54 to 149. This expansion is anchored on the robust 700MHz spectrum, renowned for its far-reaching coverage and deep signal penetration a game-changer for connecting remote rural areas with the same high-speed connectivity available in urban centers.
The phased upgrade, which began in the capital Maseru, is strategically designed to avoid service disruptions. It involves dismantling legacy systems, installing high-efficiency radio units, and reinforcing the backbone transport network to handle the country’s escalating data demands. Already, towns such as Leribe, Mafeteng, Quthing, and Butha-Buthe are experiencing the benefits of enhanced connectivity laying the groundwork for a more inclusive digital economy.
Crucially, ETL’s transformation is not just about faster internet. The company is integrating advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems to proactively manage network performance in real time. These smart technologies continuously monitor user patterns, prevent disruptions, and optimize service quality ensuring that the network evolves dynamically alongside the needs of its users.
ETL’s network upgrade is being hailed as a vital step toward building a digitally empowered Lesotho. By strengthening connectivity, the telecom giant is unlocking new opportunities in key sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and small business.
