The Global AgriInno Challenge 2026 has officially opened applications for young innovators and agritech entrepreneurs working to improve agriculture and food systems through technology and sustainable solutions. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for startups, researchers and youth-led enterprises by connecting them with funding, mentorship, investors and global markets.
Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in partnership with Zhejiang University and other global innovation partners, the challenge is focused on supporting practical and scalable solutions that can strengthen food security, improve climate resilience and modernize agriculture systems across Africa and other regions.
The competition comes at a time when many countries are looking for new ways to improve agricultural productivity while dealing with climate change, rising food prices and supply chain disruptions. Through this initiative, young innovators are being encouraged to use digital tools, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to solve some of the biggest problems affecting farmers and food systems.
The challenge is open to agritech startups, researchers, university teams, digital agriculture solution providers, youth-led organizations and entrepreneurs from around the world. Key focus areas include digital agriculture, AI and smart farming, climate resilience, food security and nutrition, sustainable agrifood systems, supply chain innovation and emerging agricultural technologies.
One of the biggest impacts of the initiative is its focus on helping innovators move beyond ideas and into scalable businesses. Selected participants will receive mentorship, technical support, international networking opportunities and access to investors and potential business partners. Winning teams can also access funding support of up to US$30,000 to help grow their solutions.
The initiative is also expected to help bridge digital and rural gaps by supporting innovations designed for smallholder farmers and underserved communities. Organizers say the program aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty, reducing hunger and lowering inequalities through inclusive innovation.
Supporting the Next Generation of Agritech Entrepreneurs
The challenge aims to bring together young innovators, thought leaders and technology entrepreneurs to co-create practical solutions that can improve farming systems and food production globally.
Participants selected for the program will take part in a 48-hour co-creation bootcamp with global mentors and experts from UN agencies, private sector companies and investment groups. The initiative will also provide expert coaching to help innovators strengthen their business models and prepare for global pitching opportunities.
For finalists attending the program in China, all travel, visa, accommodation and meal costs will be covered. Participants will also gain access to the Global AgriInno Challenge alumni network, creating long-term connections with investors, venture capital firms, industry leaders and fellow innovators.
Organizers believe these opportunities can help young entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses while creating employment and investment opportunities in local economies.
Focus on Innovation, Sustainability and Market Growth
The selection process will focus heavily on innovation, market potential, sustainability and team capacity. Organizers say solutions must show original use of emerging technologies while remaining accessible and inclusive, particularly for smallholder farmers and marginalized communities.
Projects will also be evaluated based on their ability to scale commercially, generate economic value, create jobs and attract investment. Environmental and social impact will play a major role in the judging process, with strong attention given to climate resilience, reducing food loss, promoting sustainability and improving livelihoods.
In addition, teams will be assessed on their technical expertise, operational capacity, diversity and commitment to gender equity.
The Global AgriInno Challenge 2026 is expected to become an important platform for young innovators building the future of agriculture. By combining funding, mentorship, global exposure and investor access, the initiative is positioning itself as a major opportunity for startups and entrepreneurs looking to transform agrifood systems across Africa and beyond.
