With more than 70% of Africa’s population under the age of 35, the future of the continent rests firmly in the hands of its youth. Few understand this as deeply, or act on it as effectively, as Getu Neberu. From modest beginnings in Bishoftu to launching one of Ethiopia’s most dynamic youth-focused leadership organizations, his career exemplifies what it means to invest in people before profit and long-term change over short-term gains.
As the founder of Rejoice Africa, Getu has positioned himself at the intersection of youth development, education reform and social entrepreneurship. His work is grounded not only in theory but in lived experience, having overcome significant educational and economic barriers himself, he brings a rare authenticity to the field. Through tailored leadership programs, mentorship initiatives and community-driven solutions, he is equipping a new generation of Africans with the tools to lead with integrity, vision and resilience.
His story is not just about building an organization; it’s about igniting a movement rooted in purpose, discipline and the belief that sustainable transformation begins with people.
Humble Beginnings
“I grew up in Bishoftu, a town about 45 kilometers from Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Growing up, I faced significant challenges in my education. I was not able to study in my mother tongue, which made academic progress difficult for me.”
That early language barrier would cast a long shadow over Getu’s school years. Failing the Grade 10 national exam was a breaking point. But it also marked the beginning of a different kind of education, one grounded in work and self-discovery.
“At just 16 years old, I started working as a daily laborer, earning only $0.04 per day. I began as an assistant painter and within a year, advanced to become a quality engineer assistant.”
His hunger to learn never left him. He enrolled in a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program and earned his diploma. Since then, he has completed two master’s degrees and is currently pursuing his third in Developmental Psychology at Addis Ababa University.
“Through my experiences, I have come to deeply understand the gaps in holistic personal development and access to quality education across Africa.”
The Birth of a Vision: Rejoice Africa
Africa is the youngest continent on Earth. More than 73% of its population is under 35. Yet, as Getu saw it, this youthfulness was not being nurtured.
“Africa is a continent bursting with youthful energy. However, I noticed a critical gap: the lack of holistic personal development, ineffective leadership training and an underdeveloped ecosystem to nurture young talent.”
This realization sparked Rejoice Africa, headquartered in Addis Ababa. Founded in 2019, the organization provides leadership training, coaching and mentorship to young people aged 14 to 35.
“Through our long and short-term programs, we train, coach and mentor young people… helping them develop leadership skills and personal growth in a holistic manner.”
Operating with team members and volunteers, Rejoice Africa partners with schools, universities, NGOs and government bodies to widen its impact. Since its inception, it has already trained more than 12,000 young people. “We operate a range of leadership development initiatives designed to equip young Africans with the skills, mindset and support they need to succeed.”
Adapting to a Changing World
The landscape of business and leadership has changed significantly in recent years and Getu has embraced this change with eyes wide open.
“Since I began, the business landscape has transformed dramatically, especially with the rise of AI and platforms like TikTok.”
To stay ahead, he emphasizes adaptability and learning.
“Our strategy involves regular evaluation and adaptation, allowing us to assess our current position and make informed adjustments as needed.”
That same openness to evolution has allowed Getu to connect deeply with youth, not just through traditional programs but through new platforms designed with their realities in mind.
Leadership, Life and Lessons Learned
Some of the hardest lessons in entrepreneurship, Getu says, are not about business, they are about the self.
“One of the biggest challenges I have ever faced is embracing change.”
It is not enough to change, he explains. One must change without losing who they are. Balance, authenticity and reflection are now the cornerstones of his leadership style.
“Personal reflection and evaluation have played a crucial role in my growth… This ongoing process of self-assessment has been key to overcoming challenges and moving forward with clarity and purpose.”
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance was another battle.
“Life is multifaceted and offers different experiences beyond work. Understanding this andpreparing myself to prioritize both personal and professional aspects was a turning point in my journey.”
Success Measured in Impact
Perhaps the clearest marker of Getu’s impact is the Young Leaders Development (YLD) program, Rejoice Africa’s flagship initiative. It prepares students for leadership through immersive experiences.
“It empowers students to understand themselves, develop skills and serve their communities, with plans to expand the program to universities across Africa.”
Getu’s definition of success has always centered around impact, on people, communities and future generations.
Beyond Rejoice: Building Platforms for Change
His mission doesn’t stop with one organization. Two new initiatives are underway.
“The first initiative is Young Leader Tube, a content creation platform designed to connect with youth where they spend much of their time on social media.”
The second is My Mentor Coaching and Training Center.
“This center aims to provide personalized coaching and training programs that address academic challenges and family dynamics.”
Both initiatives are designed not just to lead but to listen, to meet young people and families where they are and lift them from there.
Words to the Next Generation
For those starting out with little more than an idea, Getu offers grounded, hard-won advice.
“For small businesses or entrepreneurs venturing into this industry with limited resources, my advice is simple yet crucial: Believe in yourself, cultivate resilience and work relentlessly.”
His no-nonsense approach is clear:
“Do not depend on others; if you want something done, take the initiative and do it yourself.”
What Lies Ahead
Technology, content creation and digital platforms excite him most.
“I am particularly excited about the growing integration of digital platforms and innovative tools to empower young leaders and entrepreneurs across Africa.”
Rejoice Africa is preparing for new workshops and events that deepen youth engagement. The My Mentor Coaching and Training Center is expanding, too.
“These initiatives reflect a dynamic era of youth empowerment… and I am eager to contribute to this transformative wave across the continent.”
The Echo of Purpose
Getu Neberu’s journey defies the typical narrative. His life is not just a climb from poverty to leadership, it is a movement built on personal transformation, fueled by purpose and focused on lifting others along the way.
“Reflecting on my journey as a Young Leader, the most significant lesson I’ve learned is that life is short and it’s essential to pursue your dreams now through hard work and determination.”
It’s not about waiting for change, he says. It’s about becoming the change.
“When you love what you do and remain steadfast during times of adversity, you can achieve your dreams.”
