EDI and Federal Prison Commission Launch Transformative Program for Prisoners

Prison is meant to correct behavior but it rarely prepares people for life after release. For many inmates, returning to society can feel like starting over from zero. Recognizing this gap, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) and the Federal Prison Commission have introduced a program that goes beyond the prison sentence. By teaching business skills, fostering self-reliance and nurturing resilience, the initiative offers inmates a tangible pathway to independence, economic inclusion and dignity.

A Path to Reintegration and Self-Reliance

On January 16, 2026, 384 inmates in Addis Ababa completed a comprehensive entrepreneurship and mindset training program designed to prepare them for successful reintegration into society. Commissioner General Yenus Mulu highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting that the program plays a “critical role in preparing participants to return to society as law-abiding, capable and economically active citizens.”

During the closing ceremony, Hassan Hussein, PhD, CEO of EDI, encouraged participants to use the knowledge they gained to become productive members of society. He also emphasized EDI’s commitment to supporting graduates beyond the program, including access to finance, market opportunities and ongoing technical guidance. By combining practical business skills with psychological resilience, the initiative ensures participants are equipped not only to survive but to thrive after release.

EDI’s Leadership in Entrepreneurship and Innovation

For over a decade, EDI has been a driving force in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in Ethiopia. The institute became an autonomous entity in 2021 under Proclamation No. 1263/2021, combining two prominent projects: the UNDP-supported Entrepreneurship Development Center (EDC) and the World Bank-financed Women Entrepreneurship Development Project (WEDP).

EDI provides end-to-end support solutions for businesses, individuals and institutions through multi-tiered interventions. Its programs are tailored to startups, high-growth SMEs and inclusive entrepreneurship initiatives, with a focus on creating jobs, building sustainable value chains and supporting underrepresented communities. By bridging the gap between education, finance and market access, EDI strengthens Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and ensures that more citizens can participate in wealth creation.

The institute’s vision is to cultivate a dynamic and mature entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in Ethiopia. Its mission emphasizes collaboration, disruption and innovation across sectors. Guided by values such as creativity, learning, agility, collaboration, diversity and futurist thinking, EDI continues to set new standards for entrepreneurship development in the country.
