The future of semiconductor innovation depends as much on talent as it does on technology. In Nigeria, a new partnership between ChipMango and AI UniPod UNILAG is seeking to strengthen that talent pipeline by providing specialised training in chip design and Edge AI, creating opportunities for students and recent graduates to enter one of the world’s most advanced and rapidly growing industries.
The initiative is expected to help address the growing demand for highly skilled engineering talent while creating new pathways for young Nigerians to access careers in the global semiconductor sector. Through practical training and industry-focused learning, participants will gain skills that are increasingly sought after by technology companies involved in chip design, artificial intelligence and hardware development.
ChipMango, an Arm Approved Training Partner and global leader in semiconductor design and education, announced the partnership with AI UniPod UNILAG, Nigeria’s first AI University Innovation Pod. The collaboration will leverage ChipMango’s industry-standard curriculum, learning infrastructure and team of semiconductor engineers to deliver hands-on training designed to prepare participants for real-world applications.
The first phase of the programme will provide full scholarships to 40 trainees across two specialised learning tracks. The Chip Design track will equip participants with the technical skills required to design, test and validate semiconductor chips, while the Edge AI track will focus on developing and deploying artificial intelligence solutions on hardware devices.
The programme comes at a time when global demand for semiconductor and hardware engineering expertise continues to rise. As countries and companies invest heavily in emerging technologies, the need for professionals with specialised hardware and AI skills has become increasingly important.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the AI UniPod at the University of Lagos, ChipMango Managing Director Robert John described the partnership as a significant step toward creating meaningful career opportunities for young people seeking to build careers in the semiconductor industry.
According to John, partnerships such as this are critical to narrowing the gap between academic learning and industry requirements across Africa.
“We are excited to collaborate with the AI UniPod at UNILAG to deliver specialised, industry-aligned semiconductor education that equips participants with the knowledge and tools required to take on chip design and AI-hardware roles across the globe,” he said.
John noted that both organisations share a common goal of empowering talent with practical and market-ready skills, adding that he looks forward to seeing “the many success stories that will emerge from this program.”
The AI UniPod, launched at the University of Lagos, is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme, the Nigerian government and other strategic partners. The innovation hub provides students with AI-driven learning infrastructure, research systems and financial support aimed at fostering innovation, creating jobs and improving global competitiveness.
The ChipMango-AI UniPod UNILAG Chip Design and Edge AI programme will officially begin in August 2026. Applications are currently open to final-year students and recent graduates of the University of Lagos with backgrounds in engineering, computer science, physics and related disciplines.
Beyond the immediate training opportunities, the partnership reflects a broader effort to build a sustainable semiconductor talent pipeline in Nigeria. Through its work in microelectronics education, semiconductor design, embedded systems architecture and firmware development, ChipMango continues to support the development of future-ready workforces equipped for the demands of an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
