Applications are now open for the 2026 Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa programme, giving South African-led, historically disadvantaged person (HDP)-owned or controlled growth-stage startups an opportunity to access funding, technical support and global expertise to help scale their businesses.

The three-month hybrid accelerator is designed for technology startups using artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to solve real-world challenges. Beyond financial support, the programme aims to strengthen South Africa’s innovation ecosystem by helping promising businesses develop better products, expand their markets and create long-term economic value.

Selected startups will receive up to R1 million in non-dilutive (equity-free) funding, allowing founders to grow their businesses without giving up ownership. Participants will also gain direct access to Google experts, free Cloud TPU resources for machine learning research, founder workshops and Google’s international network of mentors, investors and industry specialists.

Applications opened on 21 July 2026 and will close on 28 August 2026.

Supporting South African Startups to Scale

The accelerator brings together a cohort of between 10 and 15 startups for an intensive programme that combines virtual and in-person learning. Throughout the three months, founders will work closely with Google engineers and industry experts to solve technical challenges that are slowing business growth.

Each startup will receive tailored guidance based on its specific needs. Founders will identify their biggest technical challenges before being matched with specialists who will help improve products, strengthen technology and support long-term business development.

The programme also includes workshops covering product design, customer acquisition and leadership development, giving founders practical skills needed to build sustainable companies.

Participating startups will benefit from early access to selected Google AI products through the Early Access Program and Trusted Tester initiatives. Eligible businesses can also apply for Google Cloud credits and receive free access to Cloud TPUs, helping them accelerate machine learning research and the development of AI-powered solutions.

Additional benefits include technical bootcamps hosted by Google, product credits where eligible, strategic guidance on company and product development, and dedicated mentoring from Google teams. Startups will also work directly with Google’s technical experts on projects aimed at solving their most important technology challenges.

Who Can Apply and What Comes Next

The programme is open to South African-led startups that have already demonstrated market traction and are ideally at the growth stage. Applicants should be building scalable products or services with a large market opportunity and a sustainable business model.

Google is particularly looking for deeply technical startups that are using technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to address meaningful challenges. Companies must also commit to having their chief technology officer or another senior technical leader actively participate throughout the programme.

While the accelerator places a strong emphasis on supporting South African-led, HDP-owned or controlled startups, Google says it is committed to building diverse accelerator cohorts and encourages all qualified startups to apply.

Following the application deadline on 28 August, the programme will begin in September 2026. Participating startups will spend three months working alongside Google experts before graduating in December 2026. The programme will conclude with a Demo Day, where founders will have the opportunity to showcase their businesses and the progress made during the accelerator.
